Most of Dominican Republic´s smuggled guns are from US: Top official

Santo Domingo.- Interior and Police minister Jose Ramon Fadul on Friday said most of the illegal guns in the country come from the United States, smuggled through ports and airports.

He said traffickers use various routes to smuggle weapons in luggage and containers, and even take them apart to bring them in separate packages.

He called the number of guns in the US a complex problem, because there are “more guns than people” in a country whose population of 318.6 million, according to the 2014 census.

Speaking on Color Vision channel 9, Fadul said his concern over the weapons trade prompted him to speak with a US official, which he didn’t identify, over controlling guns, but was told that the United States doesn’t exercise much control over exports, but does control imports into its territory.
