Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Energy and Mines approved a gold mining operation in Hondo Valle in the central mountains, in the northern part of the southwestern province of San Juan de la Maguana.

This will be the first underground mining operation in the Dominican Republic. The company granted the exploration and mining concession is called Gold Quest.

“The State will receive US$224 million during the useful life of the mine, seven years. Meaning that the company will grant US$52 million over what it should pay according to the law. The value of the Romero mine is estimated at US$561 million based on the current metal prices,” wrote Energy and Mining Minister Antonio Isa Conde.

Via his twitter account, Isa Conde wrote that GoldQuest Dominicana has pledged in a sworn statement that it will not use pollutants or water from the San Juan River or underground sources in the mining operation.
