US$140.0M agroforestry program to recover the South’s watersheds


Santo Domingo.- The Government has spent RD$7.0 million (US$140.0 million) in the Agroforestry Development Project that’s being carried out in the south region, which is the most ambitious program to recover the country’s watersheds, and aims to increase the planting of avocado, coffee, endemic and timber trees.

Agriculture minister Osmar Benítez said ove 16,000 hectares have already been planted in San Juan, Baoruco, Azua, Elías Piña and Independencia provinces.

He said the project is a joint effort with the Environment Ministry’s Forest Resources.

Benítez added that the program, which counts with the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) financial support, will beneficiaries are 6,490 farmers, will create 9,013 jobs and seeks to improve the quality of life.
