Hipólito Mejía calls mass Haitian repatriations inhumane
Santo Domingo.- Former President Hipólito Mejía criticized the mass repatriation of Haitians, calling it inhumane and emphasizing their vital role in the Dominican Republic’s agricultural and construction industries. He urged the government and private sector to establish clear hiring regulations for Haitian workers, stating, “There is no agriculture without Haitians, but rules must be set.”
Mejía dismissed claims that Haitians would no longer come to the country or that regularization would not be implemented as unrealistic. He noted that 90% of workers in agriculture and construction are of Haitian origin and argued that persecuting all involved is neither correct nor humane.
Additionally, he expressed his strong support for his daughter, Carolina Mejía, as a potential presidential candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party. He praised her leadership as mayor of the National District, citing her experience, dedication, and personal achievements as key qualifications for leading the country.
he is a businessman, they are going to deport his slaves/ cheap labor
He is also looking to promote his daughter’s prospects as the next President so any topic that will produce publicity and allow him to promote her name will do.
