Dominican government begins second phase of border wall in Dajabón

Dajabón.- The Dominican government has launched the second phase of its border wall project in Dajabón province, starting from La Sal to the municipal district of Capotillo, aiming to enhance security, control illegal immigration, and curb cross-border trafficking along the northern frontier with Haiti.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Defense Minister Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, Administrative Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza, and Governor Severina Gil. This phase adds 13 kilometers of perimeter fencing to existing infrastructure, which officials claim has already helped reduce crime in the area by over 60%.

Minister Fernández Onofre emphasized the strategic importance of this northern stretch, citing frequent incidents of cattle rustling, vehicle theft, and smuggling. He announced that the project will include observation towers, protected zones, and advanced surveillance technology. Minister Paliza noted the demographic imbalance in the region, where Haitian populations significantly outnumber Dominican residents, underscoring the need for tighter border control.
