The World Economic Forum and MICM visit the Renacer Plant in San Pedro de Macorís
San Pedro de Macorís.- The Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, Ito Bisonó, and representatives from the World Economic Forum (WEF) visited Planta Renacer in San Pedro de Macorís — the first Caribbean plant to recycle food-grade PET plastic through a complete bottle-to-bottle process.
The visit, part of the Industrial Route program, aligns with the National Roadmap for Action on Plastics, developed with the WEF’s Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to promote sustainable waste management and a circular economy in the Dominican Republic.
Located in the Quisqueya Free Trade Zone, the project is a joint effort between DIESCO and INVEMA, aimed at reducing virgin plastic imports, cutting waste exports, and converting local waste into valuable raw materials. The plant will generate 500 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs, process 24,000 tons of PET annually, and cut CO₂ emissions by 36,000 tons per year.
Minister Bisonó described Planta Renacer as proof of the country’s potential to lead in sustainable industry, while the WEF delegation recognized it as an example for the Caribbean’s green transformation.
