U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo closes due to Tropical Storm Melissa

Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo announced it will be closed this Wednesday, October 22, 2025, due to severe weather conditions brought by Tropical Storm Melissa, which continues to impact the Dominican Republic with heavy rainfall and strong winds.

In an official statement, the embassy confirmed that all consular services — including visa, passport, and other appointments for both U.S. citizens and Dominican applicants — are canceled. Those affected will receive an email in the coming days with instructions on how to reschedule their appointments.

The embassy advised U.S. citizens in need of urgent assistance to contact its emergency line at 809-567-7775. The closure coincides with preventive measures implemented by Dominican authorities, who have issued a red alert for Greater Santo Domingo and several southern provinces as the storm persists.

Guess the mantra of the US Postal Service does not apply to the Department of State. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”. DOS, guess they are wuss’s or just cutting costs. Take your pick!
