Indocafe launches first national sustainable coffee certification

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Coffee Institute (Indocafe) has introduced two major initiatives to boost the competitiveness and sustainability of the national coffee industry: the Sustainable Coffee Farm Certification Program (SCF) and the Integrated Coffee Information and Services System (Siisec).

The SCF, developed under the Biodiversity in Productive Landscapes Project (BPP)—led by the Ministry of Environment with UNDP support and Global Environment Facility (GEF) funding—represents a historic milestone as the first national certification for sustainable coffee farms in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. This certification highlights that it is possible to balance agricultural productivity with biodiversity conservation and sustainable economic growth.

Indocafe’s Executive Director, Leónidas Batista Díaz, emphasized that Siisec will enhance traceability and quality verification, particularly for exports to the European Union. During the launch, ONAPI officially granted Indocafe the “Sustainable Coffee Farm” accreditation mark, and UNDP presented the first promotional kit to producer Alfredo Díaz.
