Weather forecast: Showers and thunderstorms will mark the weekend in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) predicted a weekend marked by downpours, isolated thunderstorms, and pleasant temperatures, due to the combination of an almost stationary frontal system to the north of the country, the east/northeast wind, and a trough at different levels of the atmosphere.
Friday: passing showers and local downpours
On Friday, the east/northeast wind and the effects of the cold front will cause passing showers in La Altagracia, El Seibo, La Romana, and Hato Mayor.
Later, local downpours with isolated thunderstorms are expected to extend towards Monte Plata, San José de Ocoa, Monseñor Nouel, La Vega, Santiago, San Juan, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, and Elías Piña.
Today
During the evening, rainfall activity will be concentrated, especially in provinces along the Atlantic coast.
Saturday: the rainiest day of the weekend
- Conditions will become more unstable on Saturday, due to the persistence of the cold front and the presence of a trough in the upper atmosphere.
- From early morning, there will be showers and isolated thunderstorms on the Atlantic coast.
- In the afternoon, the interaction between the two phenomena will produce moderate to heavy downpours, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The most affected provinces will be :
Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez, Santiago, La Vega, La Altagracia, La Romana, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, and nearby areas.
The rains will gradually decrease as night falls.
Sunday: Downpours will persist due to a new trough
The frontal system will begin to weaken, turning into a trough. Although this will slightly reduce rainfall intensity, moderate downpours will continue, with a chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Rain showers will be more frequent between the afternoon and early evening in:
El Seibo, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, and San Cristóbal, in addition to the southeast, northeast, north, and the Central Mountain Range.
