Los Angeles, (EFE).- Oscar-nominated actress Zoe Saldaña is still processing the controversy surrounding her Emilia Pérez co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, after past racist and xenophobic comments allegedly made by Gascón on X resurfaced. In an interview with Variety, Saldaña said she has spoken enough on the issue but admitted feeling sadness over the backlash the film has received, particularly from Latin American audiences.
Expressing disappointment, the Dominican-born actress stated she could only speak from her personal experience and never expected to face this situation. Meanwhile, Gascón has been removed from the film’s promotional campaign and will not attend key events in Los Angeles leading up to the Oscars.
Gascón defended herself on Instagram, claiming she is a victim of “cancel culture.” However, Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard distanced himself from her, condemning the comments as “absolutely hateful.” The controversy comes at a critical time, with Academy members voting until February 18 for the upcoming March 2 Oscars.
Zoe quickly learned if you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile.
