Omar Fernández defends Dominican Republic’s right to deport undocumented migrants

Florida.- During his participation in the Pan American Freedom Forum 2025 in Florida, Dominican Senator Omar Fernández urged for increased mechanization in agriculture and construction to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign labor, particularly Haitian workers. He also advocated for higher wages in these sectors to make them more appealing to Dominican citizens.

“We must always prioritize Dominicans,” said Fernández, who represents the National District and chairs the Senate’s Dominicans Abroad Committee. He emphasized the government’s role in promoting innovation and efficiency to make the workforce less dependent on foreign labor, while ensuring better compensation for local workers.

Addressing Republican leaders in the United States, Fernández reaffirmed that Dominican law limits foreign workers to no more than 20% of a company’s workforce—subject to strict regulations. He also stressed the importance of enforcing immigration laws, noting that individuals with irregular status must return to their home countries. His remarks reflect a push for labor sovereignty, immigration control, and inclusive economic development centered on improving opportunities for Dominicans.
