New York Liberty selects Dominican Esmery Martinez in the WNBA draft

New York, US.- In the 2024 WNBA draft, the New York Liberty made significant moves, starting with the selection of Marquesha Davis from Ole Miss with the 11th overall pick. They followed this up by drafting Esmery Martinez from Arizona and Jessika Carter from Mississippi State in the second round, securing picks 17th and 23rd, respectively. Lastly, the Liberty picked Kaitlyn Davis from USC with the 35th overall pick.

Martinez, a 6-2 forward, showcased her talents at Arizona, averaging 11.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per game as a graduate student. Hailing from Hato Mayor del Rey, Dominican Republic, she consistently ranked in the top 10 of her conference for steals per game over the past four seasons.

Kolb praised Martinez’s defensive prowess, noting her strength, versatility, and anticipation as professional-level attributes. He expressed anticipation for her performance in training camp, emphasizing her potential impact on the team’s defensive strategy.
